The law on accession of the Russian Federation to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications was signed by the Russian President.
Lisbon Agreement on the protection of appellations of origin and their international registration was adopted in 1958, and the Geneva Act of the Agreement was approved in 2015. It aims to improve the international system of protection of signs indicating the geographical origin of a product and expands the list of intellectual property subject to protection.
Russia's accession to the Lisbon system will create a number of advantages for manufacturers, including possibility of filing the respective applications easily and cost-effectively. At that consumers would be assured of the quality and authenticity of regionally branded products.
The Law will become effective on December 31, 2022. After accession to the Act, Russia will be fully integrated into existing global IP protection systems.
